Watermelons are not just a refreshingly sweet, thirst-quenching fruit, but are actually abundant in nutritional benefits, from vitamins and minerals to phytonutrients. They’re rich in vitamins A, C, and B-complex compounds such as thiamin, riboflavin, and pyridoxine.

Watermelons afford a wealth of beta-carotene, as well as folate, pantothenic acid, the amino acid citrulline, and antioxidants lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin. They also contain anti-inflammatory phenolic compounds, which include both lycopene and triterpenoid. They’re plentiful in the minerals potassium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper, with trace amounts of selenium, iron, and even calcium.

The seeds of the fruit offer a wealth of nutrients as well, and should not be overlooked! Because watermelon is so nutrient-rich, it's a great juice for fasting, cleansing, and weight loss. Watermelon provides a rich resource of electrolytes and is void of cholesterol and nearly absent of fat while offering a modest amount of fiber and protein, and as little as 48 calories per cup!

Watermelon Juice is a refreshing Summer Drink made easily at home. Hydrating, healthy, instantly energizing juice with No added sugar.

Watermelon is one of the best fruits or food for hydrating the body besides cucumber. It can be consumed as a fruit, enjoyed as juice or popsicles and even as salad.

During summers, guzzling down glasses of watermelon juice is mandatory for us. In India summers last for 3 months starting March until June. We also have summers (briefly) during October - November.

Living in Mumbai, which has a tropical climate, including fresh fruits and vegetables in the form of juices and salads is quite beneficial to deal with the high levels of humidity throughout the year.

  • Can be turned into juice, smoothies, salads and frozen desserts like popsicles or slushies during summers.

Tips on How to Pick a Watermelon

  • While buying watermelon from the fruit vendor, ensure it is heavy and without any bruises.
  • Check for a yellow patch on either of the ends of the fruit. Indicates the fruit is ripe and ready to eat.
  • Tap the watermelon to hear a hollow sound. It indicates good water content.

Storing the Watermelon

  • Watermelon can be left on the kitchen counter until it is cut or sliced.
  • After its cut in half, cover and store in the refrigerator until further use.
  • You can freeze chopped pieces of watermelon to make juice, popsicles or slushies later.

How to Make Watermelon Juice?

The only time consuming part about watermelon is removing the seeds. I don't buy the seedless variety and resort to this quick method of pouring the juice through a sieve where the seeds get trapped and can be discarded.

This method reduces the prep time drastically and is ideal for busy mornings.

My method of making Watermelon Juice is similar to most fruit juices that I make at home. Tropical fruits like melons, pineapple, mango taste amazing with a hint of black salt or kala namak (Hindi).

Adding salt really brings out the natural sweetness of the fruit. If you haven't tried it, please do. In case you don't prefer juice and opt for freshly cut fruits, sprinkle salt on top and enjoy.

Why Black Salt? If you are consuming fresh fruit juice for fasting, black salt is allowed. I usually fast once a week and this is my go-to breakfast. This salt tastes great on salads and cut fruits as well.

Dilute Watermelon Juice? Watermelon juice is 90% water and hence would recommend not to dilute it further.

I also avoid adding ice cubes while serving and prefer to keep the chopped pieces of watermelon refrigerated overnight or just for a couple of hours before blending.

No Added Sugar

Watermelon is naturally sweet and doesn't need any sweetener. However, if you find that the watermelon you picked is tasting bland, add some honey, sugar or maple syrup to adjust sweetness.

How to Preserve Watermelon Juice?

  • I would highly recommend immediate consumption of all fresh fruit juices, milkshakes etc.
  • However, leftovers can be refrigerated and used within couple of hours or maximum during the day.
  • You can freeze the juice in ice trays and use them later as required.

While this is a basic recipe for summers, you can always experiment with few ideas or combinations that I have tried and tested in my kitchen.

  • Watermelon + Ginger + Lemon + Mint + Salt - Best kind of combination for summers. I make this for an upset stomach as ginger helps cooling the stomach.
  • Watermelon + Paprika + Salt + Lemon - A spicy take on the classic watermelon juice. You can try this combination with fruits like mango, pineapple, guava and green apple.
  • Watermelon + Orange + Pineapple - Makes a wonderful citrusy flavor concoction and an excellent breakfast juice packed with Vitamin C.
  • Berries + Watermelon - Slightly tart berries and sweet watermelon make a fantastic combo.

Watermelon + Milk Combo

During Ramzan, Mohabbat ka Sharbat is quite popular. A cool beverage that contains milk, rose syrup, watermelon juice and some chopped pieces of watermelon.

People consume it during Iftaar with snacks. All the ingredients in the sharbat are quite cooling for the body after a day long fast.

Watermelon Juice Recipes

The juice of watermelon rind is not as sweet as the pulp juice. In fact, it tastes a bit similar to cucumber water. It makes a great addition to a green juice or smoothie!

If you don’t enjoy watermelon rind juice because it doesn’t taste as good as the flesh, then add other fruits to the juice or blend the juice with other fruits into a smoothie.

Here are some delicious and healthy ways to use watermelon with or without rind:

Green Cooler With Watermelon-Rind

2 apples
5 Swiss Chard (or use kale leaves, 2 handfuls of spinach or other greens)
5 celery ribs
1 bunch of parsley greens
1 lemon, peeled
a slice of ginger root (about 1/3 inch)
a slice of turmeric (about 1 inch), optional
watermelon rind (min 2 rinds)

Process through your juicer, chill and enjoy!

Watermelon-Grape Delight

Process through your juicer, chill or add a few ice cubes, and enjoy!

Option: To create delicious slush, juice the rind with the grapes, then blend the juice you just made with watermelon pulp (if using seedless watermelon) and ice.

Watermelon-Ginger

Another refreshing combination is with ginger-lemon.

Process through your juicer, chill or add a few ice cubes, and enjoy! Add a few mint leaves for garnish.

Watermelon-Apple

Process through your juicer, chill or add a few ice cubes, and enjoy!

Note: If juicing with the rind, I recommend buying organically grown watermelon. Otherwise, you may want to trim off the thin layer of green skin.

Because watermelon is a great diuretic, your kidneys and bladder will be rejuvenated. You can add just about any fruit or vegetable to watermelon juice, so experiment and have some fun. This is a great weight loss juicing recipe.

You may use watermelon with seeds or seedless variety. The seeds may be a little noisy but are harmless to the juicer.

How to Make Natural Viagra with Watermelon and Lemon Juice Recipe

In order to make natural Viagra you need 2 ingredients: watermelon and lemon juice. First cut the watermelon in to small pieces and mix them in a blender, creating a watermelon juice.

How to Make Watermelon Juice

It’s really as simple as adding to a blender and blending it up!

But there are a few tricks to learn to ensure success every time:

  • Use ripe, juicy, sweet watermelon (this is key for best flavor!)
  • Choose a seedless watermelon, or remove seeds before blending
  • A high-speed blender is quickest and easiest (we don’t recommend a food processor)
  • Straining is optional if you prefer a smoother juice however, we don’t find it necessary
  • Like cold juice? Scoop and refrigerate your watermelon BEFORE blending so it’s cool and refreshing and ready for serving right away
